How to replace iphone 3G LCD for under $50

Step-by-step video showing how to remove and replace the LCD screen on an iphone 3G for under $50. 6:30 running time. The well-known video from pdaparts.com does not show all steps for the LCD, and they don’t show the suction cup method to remove the glass. This one shows how to completely remove and replace a new LCD, including steps I could not find shown elsewhere. This is for the LCD only, not the digitizer or the glass. Parts were ordered on Amazon. $35 for the LCD and $6 for the toolkit. This video highlights the LCD repair, and does not show the details of taking the phone apart. Since there are plenty of videos that show how to disassemble/reassemble the phone, we focus only on the LCD.

how much for the new LCD screen?

I don’t know the purpose of all 3 connectors, but I am fairly sure #3 is for the LCD, since it is connected to it. That ribbon cable is hard to keep all the way in the connector while you put the clip down. It will slide out easily, and if its not fully seated, the LCD will not work.

My iphone had a cracked screen so i purchased a new glass cover over the internet. I took apart my iphone and replaced the new screen with the broken one and when i put everything back together the lcd screen wouldnt turn on. I took everything apart again and put everything back together making sure the three connectors were connected correctly and still nothing. Could you please tell me the purpose of each of the first three connectors? Are they all necessary for the lcd to function?

Thank you. Amazing. This saved me a lot of hassle, money and stress. Plus I learned a bit about how my iPhone works. A couple things:

You can buy the parts through various vendors, I got mine on amazon for $26.

The video doesn’t talk about mounting brackets. You can REUSE your old one, DON’T BUY a new one. Just use a bit of prying and it’ll pop off, it’s only held on by two strips of some adhesive.

I had to fix my screen, not the Lcd so I got all the way to pop out the lcd. Used a flat head screw drive *dumb me* and it cracked the lcd… Great another 30 dollars

How do you remove the LCD screen from the LCD bracket thing?

  19. xadieu01 says:

    yeh right sucksing cup
    never get it to open

Thanks for reply. As it happens, I actually took the whole thing apart, took the battery out just to “reset” it and then paid special attention to pushing #3 as far in as it would go. This was going to be my last attempt if it ended in failure, luckily it didn’t! :) I would say to anyone who replaces the LCD and their screen doesn’t work, to RECHECK that connection. I’m failry certain that was what was keeping it from working.
    cheers

1 and 2 snap into place, so you should feel them click. 3 is for the LCD and its tricky, the ribbon cable needs to be fully inserted, and then clipped. It is hard to keep it seated while you get the clip down.

  22. pentelhos says:

So again, 1,2 and 3 connectors. I’ve checked then and it seems that at least 1 and 2 are impossible to mess up, in that they are either in or not. #3 however seems like it “might” be in but I can’t tell. I’m wondering if they ALL must be connected for the LCD to work? Anyone do this and know? otherwise, I have a bad new LCD or I fried something. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.
    cheers

Hi Gaird8. Great video. One of the best I’ve seen for fixing the iPhone. I followed your directions and in addition to replacing to LCD, I also replaced the glass/digitizer. However, when I put it all together – NOTHING! Phone did work before hand it just had cracked screen and the home button wasn’t working. Now, I know it has power because ITunes recognizes it AND the vibrate comes on as well. I have one question, will the phone still work if u don’t hook up 1,2,and 3? (continued)
